Alerts stop when the phone is idle

To save battery, Android can stop an app from running in the background. A prayer app then cannot wake up to play the athan, so alerts stop when the phone is idle or overnight.

How to check

  1. Open your phone’s Settings
  2. Tap Apps, then find the app in the list
  3. Tap App battery usage (on some phones just Battery)
  4. If you see Allow background usage, switch it on. Then choose Unrestricted.

Your phone’s make matters

Some manufacturers add a battery setting of their own on top of Android’s. Pick yours. Menu names vary a little between versions.

Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO

Open

  1. Settings
  2. Apps
  3. Permissions
  4. Background autostart
and switch the app on (on older phones: the Security app, then Permissions, then Autostart). Then open

  3. Manage apps
, choose the app, tap Battery saver and choose No restrictions. Finally, in your recent apps, press and hold the app’s card and tap the padlock.

Samsung

Open

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. Background usage limits
(on some phones inside Battery and device care). Make sure the app is not in “Sleeping apps” or “Deep sleeping apps”, and add it to Never sleeping apps.

Oppo, realme or OnePlus

Open

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. App battery management
(on newer phones inside Power saving settings). Choose the app and switch on Allow background activity.

vivo

Open

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. Background power consumption management
(on some phones called High background power consumption). Allow the app to run in the background.

Tecno, Infinix or itel

Open the Phone Master app, then Toolbox, then Auto-start management, and allow the app. Then in

(on some phones Battery Lab), turn off power saving for the app.

Huawei

Open

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. App launch
, or search Settings for “App launch”. Switch the app’s automatic switch off; in the box that opens, switch on Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background.
